Career Counseling

The College of General Studies has a career consultant in the McCarl Center to assist CGS students and veterans with resources to plan and implement career plans!

Individual appointments and workshops are allow you to explore, discuss, and make decisions about your career and employment options or seek assistance in making a career transition. You can meet with our career consultant for one-on-one counseling and strategy sessions and to request assistance with the following:

Types of job opportunities related to academic majors

To help you explore your goals, discover your strengths, and identify your unique qualities, our career consultant offers tests that inventory interests, skills, values, and personality (including the Strong Interest and Inventory, Skill Scan, and the Myers Briggs Type Indicator).

Internship and full-time employment

Our career consultant can answer your questions about getting an internship or offer tips on where to find full-time employment. For more detailed information about internships in the College of General Studies, please visit our internship section.

Resume and Cover Letter Writing

Learn how to write effective professional correspondence including resumes and curricula vitae, cover letters, thank you notes, e-mails, and professional correspondence.

Distance Career Counseling

Are you a CGS student, or a military-affiliated or veteran student at Pitt, interested in career counseling but can't get to the Posvar Hall for an appointment? Try Distance Counseling. Carol Balk, career consultant for CGS and veteran students, is now offering online career appointments via Skype. You get the same great face-to-face interaction and support that is provided in an on-campus career appointment without having to be on campus during business hours.
